While the plans earlier this year called for Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns to headline WrestleMania 40, Teddy Long believes The Rock should replace the American Nightmare.
Speaking on a recent edition of “The Wrestling Time Machine” podcast, the former WWE SmackDown General Manager commented on why The Rock should be Roman Reigns’ opponent, Cody Rhodes being a “backup” plan, and more.
You can check out some highlights from the podcast below:
On why The Rock should be Reigns’ opponent: “Well, I look at it as a business decision — and that’s what this is all about: business. Nothing against Cody Rhodes, I love him to death, he’s another one I’ve known since he was a little kid. But, who’s going to sell tickets: Cody Rhodes or The Rock? You know, and that’s the way I look at it.”
On Cody Rhodes: “If that does happen, there’s always still room for Cody, because at the end there that’s something that Cody can do. So we don’t want to count him out because Cody, I think, is doing a hell of a job there. But who’s going to buy tickets or money-wise? I think The Rock would be the guy.”

In a recent episode of “The Wrestling Time Machine” podcast, former WWE SmackDown General Manager Teddy Long shared his thoughts on the potential WrestleMania 40 main event between Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns. According to Long, he believes that The Rock should replace Rhodes as Reigns’ opponent.
Long emphasized that his perspective is based on a business decision. While he has great respect for Cody Rhodes and acknowledges his talent, Long believes that The Rock would be a bigger draw and would sell more tickets for the event. He stated, “Who’s going to sell tickets: Cody Rhodes or The Rock? You know, and that’s the way I look at it.”
However, Long also mentioned that there could still be room for Cody Rhodes in the WrestleMania 40 lineup. He acknowledged Rhodes’ abilities and the potential for him to contribute to the event in another capacity. Long expressed that while The Rock may be the more lucrative option, Cody Rhodes should not be counted out entirely.
