Why Jon Moxley was Chosen by AEW/NJPW as the IWGP World Champion: The Underlying Factors

Jon Moxley enjoys a robust relationship with New Japan Pro Wrestling and has been significantly highlighted in the organization throughout the years.

Earlier this year, at the NJPW ‘Windy City Riot’, Moxley snatched the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship title from Tetsuya Naito. Following this victory, Moxley successfully maintained his championship in several matches, ending with a rematch against Tetsuya Naito at the 2024 AEW x NJPW: Forbidden Door event. In this match, however, Moxley passed on the title back to the Japanese star.

Information from The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reveals that Moxley’s crowning as the IWGP World Heavyweight Champion came about from a mutual decision between AEW President Tony Khan and NJPW. This arrangement allowed for two instances of title changes to take place in the United States.

This cooperation paved the way for Moxley’s trailblazing achievement of becoming the pioneering wrestler to possess the AEW, IWGP, and WWE World Championships simultaneously.
