Jon Moxley has a well-known affiliation with the New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW), having played a prominent role in numerous engagements over time.
Earlier this year, Moxley claimed the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship title after defeating Tetsuya Naito in the ‘Windy City Riot’ event hosted by NJPW. His consecutive successful defenses of the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship led up to a climactic rematch with Tetsuya Naito in the AEW x NJPW: Forbidden Door 2024 event. Unfortunately for Moxley, he lost his title to Naito in this match.
According to Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Moxley’s ascension to the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship was the result of a joint decision by Tony Khan, the president of AEW, and NJPW. This cooperative move allowed two significant title transition events to take place on American soil.
Thanks to this teamwork, Moxley achieved a unique feat in wrestling history. He is the inaugural wrestler to concurrently hold the AEW, IWGP, and WWE World Championships.
