Ric Flair is happy just being “Charlotte’s Dad” and watching her find success on her own.
Flair recently spoke with WrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard and spoke about his relationship with Charlotte, and how he stayed in touch by sharing cool fan moments from her career. Pritchard shared a story about seeing Ric pause an autograph signing to send his daughter a photo of a young fan decked out in Charlotte Flair gear, and Ric joked that he annoyed Charlotte all of the time with stuff like that but said it’s a good way to stay in touch.
“I do that all of the time. If I see something cute [like a fan dressed like her] I take pictures and send them to her. I just bug her all of the time, she can’t get away from me. [laughs] She always says ‘Dad, please!’ but that just gives me a reason to send her a text without bugging her,” Flair said. “We’re very close and there’s nothing more special than the bond between a father and a daughter.”
Early on in her WWE career, Charlotte was distanced from being “Ric Flair’s daughter” in an attempt to allow her to create her own identity, but later she reclaimed the “Flair” surname and WWE acknowledged it more as she climbed the ranks. Ric noted that there’s a misconception that he advises Charlotte in her career, but he declared that the credit for her success is all hers.
“She is the queen. I don’t give her advice. People have always said that, I cannot take credit for any of that. She has found her own way, on her own and that’s the honest to God’s truth. All I tell her is ’you’re great’ and that’s the extent of my involvement because she is. I just reinforce to her how good she is. I’m not embellishing,” Flair said, “she’s that good and that much better and that’s just the way it is. I don’t even have to think twice about it.”
Flair went on to speak about how the Women’s Evolution took things to a whole new level for WWE’s women and noted that it’s hard to fathom how much Charlotte has accomplished in just five years. He said the number of great matches she has had is countless and there’s so many more to come, adding that she might have gone in as “Ric’s daughter” but she’s become a star and he’s happy just being ‘Charlotte’s Dad’ now.
“That’s how it’s always been and that’s all I’ve wanted to be. That’s how it needs to be played. That’s someone else’s expression—Ric Flair’s daughter—that’s who she was when she went down there,” Flair said, “but now in terms of the wrestling business, I’m just her dad.”
