In the most recent episode of Jim Ross’s “Grilling JR” podcast, he shed some light on Jeff Hardy’s AEW journey and the possible reasons for its shortcomings. Ross suggested,

“There’s a good chance it was a matter of reliability. Hardy had numerous opportunities to reignite his career and get back on top, but he somehow couldn’t make the most of them. Many of his past experiences didn’t paint a pretty picture, which didn’t make things any easier. I even tried talking to him and suggested rehabilitation which was my way of offering help.”

Ross expressed his belief in transparency when dealing with talent, “One should always be honest with them. Let them know the truth and let things pan out accordingly. I believe that’s the right way to conduct business with anyone. Just be honest, upfront and let the results take their course.” He was unsure why Hardy wasn’t utilized more prominently in AEW, suggesting that his past played a part.

The start of 2022 saw Hardy becoming a part of AEW following a contentious departure from WWE. He left WWE following an incident at a live event that led the organization to sever ties with him over suspected substance abuse, although drug tests later confirmed he was sober.

Despite his popularity, Hardy’s tenure with AEW had its fair share of obstacles including injuries and a significant suspension after a DUI arrest. The charges against Hardy were eventually dismissed. Voicing his discontent in December 2023, Hardy felt he was unseen in AEW, a sentiment his brother Matt concurred with.
