EC3 Recalls Steve Austin’s Alliance Heel Run, Plays ‘Monday Morning Quarterback’ For Sting vs. Hogan
The Watch List takes a look at what matches you should be watching while you’re at home and they come recommended by your favorite professional wrestling stars.
WrestleZone recently spoke with EC3, who has captured the wrestling community’s attention with his unique “viral” style promos as he waits to make his next move. EC3 said he doesn’t want wrestling to be too dependent on nostalgia, but says the good thing about it is watching older matches and finding things that were lost or forgotten. Pointing out that he doesn’t watch the current wrestling product because it’s too conformed, he pointed to three matches in WWE and WCW history as some that he recently watched.
“Today when I was doing cardio I watched old RAWs and I found a forgotten about Steve Austin versus Kurt Angle match, a title match where Austin was the Alliance heel and Kurt Angle was the good guy, William Regal cost him [the title]. I like watching guys like that work because you can tell they’re out there feeling it, it’s not something where everything is planned or coordinated in the back. Those are just two fuckin’ brick shithouses going at it, high-level, sometimes it’s messy and sloppy, I love stuff like that.
“We were just watching Sting versus [‘Hollywood’ Hulk] Hogan when Sting was gone for the year and then came back at Starrcade. In my estimation in a nostalgia perspective—and I’ll ‘Monday morning quarterback’ it—they blew the finish with the fast count. Sting should have just come in there and killed Hogan and everything would have been great, but whatever. It’s not my ball, I don’t care if I drop it.
“Then I threw on RVD vs. [John] Cena from One Night Stand. I wanted to watch Kurt [Angle] and Randy [Orton] from that and I stuck around for Cena and RVD. Seeing the Hammerstein Ballroom packed, man, I wanted to be there. That hostile environment, I love that.”
We added some free-to-watch recommendations to the list and selected a good mix of bouts from EC3’s career; you can check out the full-length matches he picked on WWE Network.
