In the latest episode of his podcast “Something To Wrestle,” industry veteran Bruce Prichard shared his insights on several thrilling topics. Among them, he talked about some of the most intense fights he’d seen behind-the-scenes in wrestling, the potential of Kerry Von Erich as a heel, and more.
Below are excerpts from Prichard’s podcast:
In discussing backstage fights, Prichard recalled the infamous brawl between Jacques Rougeau and Dynamite Kid. Prichard described the incident, saying, “The fight wasn’t widespread chaos. However, it was cruel in a way that Jacques got the first hit hard at Dynamite Kid. After that, Dynamite Kid didn’t retaliate. No one even dared to intervene as Raymond [Rougeau] was nearby. Pat attempted to cease it. Eventually, they were separated, putting an end to the brutal spectacle. Real fights are rarely entertaining when viewed up close. It doesn’t compare to the controlled environment of UFC. When a fight becomes uncontrollable, and possibly involves people you care about, it’s a whole different ballgame. It’s not a pleasant scene.”
When pondering upon Kerry Von Erich’s potential as a heel, Prichard stated, “Not possible. Kerry Von Erich was always too decent of a person to fit the heel’s character. There was something about him that people seemed to like a lot, and he was an inherently good guy. It would have been hard for anyone to dislike Kerry Von Erich.”
Despite not seeing him as a heel, Bruce believed that, under different circumstances, Von Erich could’ve reached unprecedented heights in the WWE. “If Kerry had managed to maintain his lifestyle, I could have seen him as the WWE Champion. The real challenge would have been telling his story fully – his loss of foot after a motorcycle accident and what he accomplished thereafter is a remarkable tale that wasn’t given its due. The documentary, The Iron Claw tried its best to narrate it in the given time frame. Trying to condense the expansive family history of Kerry Von Erich into two hours is hard. If we could tell the entire story of Kerry Von Erich accurately, he could have been one of the greatest champions of all time,” elaborated Prichard.
