Randy Orton returned from his eighteen-month hiatus at WWE Survivor Series: WarGames 2023, helping Team Rhodes defeat The Judgment Day in the men’s WarGames match.
As we previously reported here on eWn, Orton’s theme music was considered for a change from “Voices,” the version that has played since he began using it.
In a recent interview with Graham ‘GSM’ Matthews, Orton confirmed that WWE indeed worked on a new entrance theme for him and that he isn’t a big fan of “Voices” unlike others.
Orton said, “Rev Theory is great. My song is great. A lot of people enjoy it. I have never loved, loved, loved it. You see me bouncing my head to New Day’s music or AJ Styles comes to the ring with his music. I’m singing along. Samoa Joe, when he was with us. The instrumentals. Roman, Judgment Day. There is some music that gets me going. The kind of music I listen to in the gym, the kind of music that pumps me up, doesn’t really fit Randy Orton the character. There is some truth to what you read. I was just as much behind it as WWE. We actually were working throughout the summer, me and Neil Lowry, with a new song. It kind of kept evolving and evolving, and when we thought we had something, a higher-up, some WWE brass would listen to it, and they’d go, ‘That kind of sounds like Roman’s here. Take that out.’ It would evolve again. ‘Now what do you think?’ ‘We need to change this part because we need better cues for camera angles.’ It would evolve. It got to a point where, we played it at Survivor Series with the intent of, ‘Am I going to come out to a new song tonight?’ The decision in the 11th hour was ‘Voices’ is a song that people have learned to love and goddamnit, even though it doesn’t necessarily get my blood pumping, it gets all those fans pumping and they know when they hear the first few notes, they know who is walking down to the ring and how that makes them feel. To change all of that…I was going to change my gear, I was going to try and make all these changes. I bought a pair of f**king kickpads. ‘Let me try and change my look.’ In the 11th hour it was like, ‘What am I doing? I’m going to look like some old guy who changed his clothes.’ I think the only change I had was, instead of ORTON on the back of my gear, it says RKO. That’s the kind of change, unless you’re looking for it, you’re not going to notice. I like the fact that, throughout my career, I’ve worn the same s*it, come out to the same s*it, done the same s*it, and it’s worked. If it ain’t broke, why change it? As far as the music goes, I would love, before it’s all said and done, to have some music that gives me goosebumps. ‘Voices’ is great. It makes sense. The words make sense. It’s damn near written for me, I feel like. Rich from Rev Theory is a hell of a singer and the band is great, no problem with them at all, but it’s not the kind of music that pumps up Randy Orton.”
Randy Orton Discusses Potential Change to His Entrance Theme
WWE superstar Randy Orton recently made his highly anticipated return to the ring after an eighteen-month hiatus. Orton’s comeback took place at WWE Survivor Series: WarGames 2023, where he played a crucial role in helping Team Rhodes defeat The Judgment Day in the men’s WarGames match. However, it seems that Orton’s return wasn’t the only thing fans were excited about. There were rumors circulating that his iconic entrance theme, “Voices,” might undergo a change.
In a recent interview with Graham ‘GSM’ Matthews, Orton confirmed that WWE had indeed been working on a new entrance theme for him. He expressed his feelings towards “Voices” and revealed that he isn’t a big fan of the song, unlike many others. Orton explained that while he appreciates the work of Rev Theory, the band behind the song, it doesn’t resonate with him on a personal level.
Orton went on to discuss how certain entrance themes of other WWE superstars, such as The New Day, AJ Styles, Samoa Joe, and Roman Reigns, have a strong impact on him. He mentioned that these songs get him pumped up and even find himself singing along. However, the type of music that motivates him in the gym and gets his blood pumping doesn’t align with the character of Randy Orton.
The interview shed light on the process of creating a new entrance theme for Orton. He revealed that he had been working closely with Neil Lowry throughout the summer to develop a new song. However, each time they thought they had something, WWE higher-ups would listen to it and provide feedback for further changes. Orton mentioned that some parts of the song were compared to Roman Reigns’ theme, leading to further alterations.
The decision to stick with “Voices” was made at the last minute before Survivor Series. Orton explained that the song has become synonymous with his character, and fans instantly recognize it when they hear the first few notes. Changing the entrance theme would have required other alterations, such as new gear, which Orton ultimately decided against.
While Orton expressed his desire to have an entrance theme that gives him goosebumps, he acknowledged that “Voices” is a great song that makes sense for his character. He praised the lyrics and the talent of Rich from Rev Theory but admitted that it doesn’t pump him up like other songs do.
The interview provides fans with a glimpse into the creative process behind WWE entrance themes and the importance they hold for both the wrestlers and the audience. It also highlights Orton’s dedication to his character and the recognition that sometimes, sticking to what works best is the right decision.
As Orton continues his journey in WWE, fans will undoubtedly keep an eye out for any potential changes to his entrance theme. Whether it remains “Voices” or evolves into something new, one thing is certain – Randy Orton’s return has brought excitement back to the wrestling world.
