Matt Cardona hopes his success since his departure from WWE has proved that wrestlers can thrive outside of a major promotion.
After his release in 2020, Cardona briefly appeared for AEW but did not sign a contract, and has since established himself in other companies.
During a recent edition of the “Swerve City” podcast, Cardona explained that he wants to prove that there are opportunities outside WWE and AEW, but would still pick up the phone. He said,
“I don’t want to go to AEW or WWE just to be a guy on the roster. Nothing against that, but I’ve been there and done that. Back in the day, when I started the YouTube show, as it got further along and I realized what I was trying to do, I kind of wanted to prove that you bet on yourself, you can get yourself over, you can get yourself noticed.
“Now, I want to prove, AEW and WWE, number one and two, it’s debatable which is one and two, I’m not saying they’re not, but I want to prove you can be a successful pro wrestler without them. At the same time, I’m not saying if Tony Khan called, I wouldn’t pick up. Of course not. Tony! What’s up man!? You need me for Collision? Or if Triple H called or Vince [Vince McMahon] called. Right now, my goal is not to get back there.”
Cardona’s most recent match saw Matt & Steph De Lander defeat Charli Evans & Everett Connors at the ‘GCW Please, Buddy’ event last week.

In the world of professional wrestling, success is often associated with signing a contract with a major promotion like WWE or AEW. However, Matt Cardona, formerly known as Zack Ryder in WWE, is proving that wrestlers can thrive outside of these big-name companies.
Cardona was released from WWE in 2020 and briefly appeared for AEW without signing a contract. Since then, he has been making a name for himself in other wrestling promotions. During a recent episode of the “Swerve City” podcast, Cardona expressed his desire to prove that there are opportunities outside of WWE and AEW, but he would still consider picking up the phone if they called.
Cardona’s journey to success outside of major promotions began when he started a YouTube show. As he gained more visibility, he realized that he could bet on himself and get noticed without relying solely on WWE or AEW. He wanted to prove that wrestlers can be successful without the backing of these companies.
While Cardona is focused on building his career outside of WWE and AEW, he acknowledges that he would still consider an offer from them. If Tony Khan from AEW or Triple H or Vince McMahon from WWE were to call, he would be open to the opportunity. However, his current goal is not to return to these promotions.
In his most recent match, Cardona teamed up with Steph De Lander to defeat Charli Evans and Everett Connors at the ‘GCW Please, Buddy’ event. This victory further solidifies his position as a successful wrestler outside of major promotions.
Cardona’s story serves as an inspiration to aspiring wrestlers who may feel limited by the idea that success can only be achieved within WWE or AEW. He is proving that with determination, hard work, and the ability to bet on oneself, wrestlers can thrive and make a name for themselves in other promotions.
