2021 promises to be much more active on the movie front after a year that was mostly stalled out due to the global pandemic. Zack Snyder, who is currently working on his redo of Justice League for HBO Max, has another streaming-first project in the works for fans who want to stay home for their entertainment.

In an exclusive sitdown with Entertainment Weekly, Snyder went into much detail about Army of the Dead, a so-called zombie heist film starring former World Heavyweight Champion Dave Batista. According to the director, it’s not just a “balls-to-the-wall” zombie flick, it’s also got heart!

“So you expect pure zombie mayhem, and you get that, 100 percent. But also you get these really amazing characters on a fantastic journey. It’s going to surprise people that there’s a lot of warmth and real emotion with these great characters.”

The movie, which spent years in development hell at Warner Bros. before Netflix came in to save it, is a spiritual sequel to Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake. Batista stars as one of a band of thieves going after a zombie-infested casino in a locked-down Las Vegas.

Batista told Entertainment Weekly that he initially rejected the project, but the script changed his mind.

“I said I wasn’t interested. I had this chip on my shoulder and was looking for juicy [dramatic roles]. Then I read the script and it was a lot deeper and had more layers than I thought. And also, to be quite frank, I wanted to work with Zack.”

The former wrestler reportedly gave up a part in James Gunn’s Suicide Squad film in order to be a part of Army of the Dead. Viewers will be able to see if he made the right choice later this year when the movie hits Netflix.
