The XFL has been going through a sudden decline into bankruptcy, and a new report from The Athletic suggests that Vince McMahon may be trying to buy the league out of bankruptcy court in Delaware.

Speaking to various XFL creditors and sources, Daniel Kaplan noted that XFL President Jeffrey Pollack has called venues in St. Louis and Seattle about reinstating lease agreements. After launching in February, the XFL lasted just five weeks before shutting down due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Since then, the league has surprisingly shut down for good, and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in mid-April.

According to the report, however, some team officials believe that may have been a purposely play by McMahon in an effort to potentially ride out the pandemic and subsequent economic turmoil without actually paying to operate the league. Whether or not McMahon actually plans to reinstate the league once the COVID-19 outbreak is over remains to be seen, but this is likely not the last time we’ll hear about the XFL in the coming months.
