WWE Scrapped SmackDown Segment After Rey Mysterio Injury

On Friday’s WWE SmackDown, Rey Mysterio battled Santos Escobar in the United States Title Invitational Finals. This bout ended earlier than expected.

Mysterio was injured after being hit with an outside dive by Escobar during the commercial break, leading to WWE medical checking on Mysterio before the referee called off the match, and Escobar was declared the winner.

Post-match, Mysterio congratulated Escobar on the win. Escobar will challenge US Champion Austin Theory for the title on the August 11 edition of SmackDown at the Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Fightful Select reported that Escobar was originally supposed to win the match cleanly and there was a backstage segment follow-up that was planned that had to be nixed.
