WWE has issued a statement regarding the use of footage of the Auschwitz concentration camp during last weekend’s WrestleMania 39 event.
For the promo hyping the match between Rey and Dominik Mysterio, footage of the camp was used to highlight Dominik’s ex-con character.
The use of the footage has been condemned, with the Auschwitz Memorial Museum branding WWE “shameless” over the incident.
The fact that Auschwitz image was used to promote a WWE match is hard to call “an editing mistake”. Exploiting the site that became a symbol of enormous human tragedy is shameless and insults the memory of all victims of Auschwitz.https://t.co/b4bbYgWPwj https://t.co/Xud4rbhEUS pic.twitter.com/tuJrzmK6mQ

In a statement to the Washington Post, WWE said the following:
“We had no knowledge of what was depicted. As soon as we learned, it was removed immediately.”
Rey defeated Dominik at WrestleMania 39: Night One in a 15-minute match.
