WWE Isn’t “Married” To The Idea Of Cody Rhodes Being World Champion

Is Cody Rhodes dethroning Roman Reigns as champion as surefire a thing as many believe?

At the 2023 Royal Rumble, Rhodes returned from injury to win the Men’s Rumble match and has declared his intention to topple the Tribal Chief.

Given Rhodes’ booking since his WWE return and the importance of WrestleMania, many feel that April is the perfect time for Reigns’ incredible tenure on top to end.

In the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Dave Meltzer reports that Rhodes was hardly WWE’s first choice to face Roman Reigns.

“The fact WWE wanted Dwayne Johnson in the spot, and even contacted Steve Austin for the spot, tells you they weren’t married to the idea of Rhodes having to headline the show or win the title, at least from Reigns.”

Meltzer added that Rhodes winning the title does not have to happen at WrestleMania, but believes the American Nightmare should eventually be champion.
