WWE is currently in talks with state gambling regulators to legalize betting on high-profile bouts.
According to several reports, the state gambling commissions have been unreceptive to the idea of legalized betting on WWE matches, with one of the commissions “pretty much” rejecting the idea outright.
The MGM Grand sportsbook is also critical about taking any bets on professional wrestling, as representatives believe the idea is “completely ludicrous.”
WWE executives have cited betting on the Academy Awards as a template to convince regulators that gambling on scripted matches is safe due to the fact that betting on the Oscars is legal in some states.
Furthermore, WWE has promised to have the same safeguards and measures regarding match results as the Academy Awards does for the Oscar results.
If legalized, betting on matches could significantly alter WWE’s creative flow. Moreover, scripted results of WWE matches would need to be finalized months ahead of time.
