The 2023 WWE Draft event will begin on the April 28 episode of Friday Night SmackDown (in Corpus Christi, Texas) and conclude with the May 1 episode of Monday Night RAW (in Fort Worth, Texas).
This will be the first draft held since 2021 and the first under the creative direction of Triple H, following Vince McMahon’s retirement in July 2022.
Fightful Select is reporting that several NXT names have been pitched for main roster call-ups. However, nothing is set in stone yet, as draft plans keep changing all the way to an hour or so before showtime.
Ilja Dragunov, Pretty Deadly, and Tyler Bate have all been considered for main roster call-ups. Cameron Grimes has also been considered for months and he worked a SmackDown taping this past February.
When asked about Cameron’s status, it was noted that NXT talents do not work SmackDown tapings, rather, they usually work the Main Event tapings for RAW.
The idea is to “add intrigue” to Main Event, provide the talent with the experience of wrestling in front of bigger crowds, and work on main roster television with veterans.
While an impressive performance could signal a future main roster call-up, simply because a wrestler works main roster tapings doesn’t mean he/she will be called up.
In fact, Dakota Kai and Bronson Reed both worked main roster tapings before their release.
Additionally, WWE Hall of Famer Teddy Long will appear on SmackDown to initiate the Draft.
