Recent guest on the “Insight” podcast and AEW star, Will Ospreay, talked about the influence of having 48 wrestling matches rated five stars by The Wrestling Observer on his career.
Discussing the benefits of these 5-star ratings on his professional journey, Ospreay shared how it was particularly helpful during the time he became an independent contractor.
Below are some noteworthy points from his interview on the podcast:
Addressing the assertion that 48 five-star reviews from Dave Meltzer don’t necessarily pay the bills, Ospreay said: “That was an active discussion for a while, where people suggested ‘five-star matches don’t pay bills.’ However, I have been able to take care of my father’s house expenses and also paid for renovating my mother’s kitchen, so…”
On being questioned how his high-rated performances helped his position upon entering free agency, he said: “Frankly, the general perception was more like, if patrons are viewing it and appreciating it, they admired the effort, creativity, and the intricacies that I weaved into the bout that made it so remarkable in Dave’s opinion. There’s no denying that everyone’s correct, it doesn’t directly pay bills, but considering the scenario when I was getting ready to enter as a free agent, the question was ‘who wouldn’t want to recruit the guy that is consistently delivering top-class performance, one after another?’”
