On the “Insight with Chris Van Vliet” podcast, AEW wrestler Will Ospreay made several remarks about his professional journey, learning from Chris Jericho to slow down in the ring, and more.
Below are some of the podcast’s key points:
Discussing his aspirational match for AEW All In, Ospreay expressed his strong desire to headline the event. His ambition stems from his belief that both the promotion and fans hold faith in his vision for AEW. From his perception, his time in Japan did not garner the same level of trust. Now in AEW, he has devoted himself to unify the team and uphold the fans’ trust.
Concerning his place in the wrestling world, Ospreay voiced his assurance in his wrestling skills and connection with the audience. However, he admits uncertainty about being titled ‘the best’ in a field where the criteria for that classification are diverse; from merchandise sales, ability to attract large crowds, to actual ring performance.
Regarding his discussion with Chris Jericho about reducing the risks in the ring, Ospreay recalled a mishap in 2018 which left his neck permanently affected. While performing a stunt with Marty, his neck contorted underneath him, causing pain to radiate down his arm. Jericho’s ensuing phone call advising him to be selective about his stunts had a significant effect on Ospreay.
On reflecting upon this advice, Ospreay acknowledged that it has influenced his ring strategies. In an attempt to create memorable moments, he picks his spots more carefully to deliver crowd-pleasing stunts while mitigating risks.
Discussing his future in wrestling, Ospreay shared that he does not like to consider when he will retire from the sport. Rather, he imagines his departure to be abrupt and surprising, characterized by an impromptu farewell and a subsequent retreat into obscurity.
