At the WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event XXXVII, an unexpected incident took place. Kevin Owens made an unsolicited attack on Cody Rhodes right after their contest. New information has surfaced giving insight into the rationale behind such a move.
After unsuccessfully vying for the Undisputed WWE Championship during Saturday’s spotlight event, Owens directed a surprise package piledriver towards Rhodes.
According to reports by Fightful Select, this unexpected turn of events was orchestrated to keep Saturday’s results under wraps.
In a bid to provide their talent with a well-earned holiday break, WWE performed a double SmackDown taping last week. This meant that the potential actions by Owens and Rhodes in front of a live crowd could possibly divulge match outcomes, hence the need for discretion.
Following the match, the assault on Rhodes allowed WWE to carry on with the show’s taping, without having to involve Rhodes and Owens.
The information sourced suggests that the initial design was to air the assault scene in SmackDown and feature Owens in a backstage scene on the weekend.
As updates come in about Rhodes’ health post-assault, WWE has reported that he has an axial compression of the cervical spine, as well as a cervical muscle strain accompanied with spasms. WWE announced,
“Cody Rhodes injury update following Saturday Night’s Main Event
Following an eventful Saturday Night’s Main Event, which saw Cody Rhodes retain the Undisputed WWE Title, the intense face-off ended with Kevin Owens launching an unanticipated attack on ‘The American Nightmare’ post the broadcast.
It has been confirmed today that Cody Rhodes has experienced cervical swelling and was asked to stay overnight at a local hospital for observation and further tests.
Contrary to a fracture concern, the X-Rays cleared Rhodes showing no such injuries. However, Rhodes has been officially diagnosed with axial compression of the cervical spine, along with a cervical strain introduced along with spasms.”
