Heading your way is another eWrestlingNews Query of the Day!
Last night at the ROH Final Battle, Athena caught me off guard by retaining the ROH Women’s World Championship against Billie Starkz. Given that there was a real possibility that Starkz might have emerged victorious in their last face-off, the decision to build up anticipation for a whole year for a rematch that ends no differently is quite audacious.
Even though I’m not a regular Ring of Honor viewer, I’m pondering what the game plan could be. So, today’s question for you is “Who do you believe has the potential or is predicted to finally defeat Athena?”

In terms of my thoughts…
As someone who doesn’t follow the show closely, my viewpoint may be biased or perhaps missing some vital signs that indicate a forthcoming twist. If that’s the situation, I am eager to learn more from the comments below. Generally, looking at the team that I am familiar with, I can’t think of a more fitting contender to have taken down Athena than Billie Starkz.
There’s a chance that Athena might be holding onto the ROH title to defend the brand at Wrestle Dynasty and after achieving that feat, there could be a rematch for the third time round with Starkz winning the belt. Personally, I find this idea unnecessary and reckless; it compromises the top champion and storyline, jeopardizes the lineage of the belt which has a record-breaking credibility, and potentially hinders the progress of an emerging talent. This is all in the hopes that the sight of Athena holding up the belt at a New Japan event would make a significant impact, a claim I find hard to believe. I doubt that the visual alone could significantly boost ROH’s viewership among the New Japan audience.
If the title doesn’t fall into Starkz’s hands post-Wrestle Dynasty, I fear that there could be a plan for Mercedes Mone to claim the title, an idea I find hard to support, or that there might not be a plan at all. Maybe Tony Khan wishes to extend Athena’s reign, mirroring WWE’s desire for a 1000+ day championship reign for Roman Reigns.
As a casual viewer, I will share the disappointment of the regular viewers if, Athena loses to an unexpected opponent like Abadon on a random televised match or has to give up the title due to an injury. A vacant reign is always less satisfying.
