Chelsea Green has received strong backing from ex-WWE writer, Vince Russo, in the ongoing competition to take the maiden WWE Women’s U.S. Champion title.
Kicking off her journey to the crown, Green triumphed over Bianca Belair and Blair Davenport in the initial round of the tournament, featured on the previous week’s episode of WWE SmackDown. She now moves on to the next leg.
Echoing his views of support for the ex-Women’s Tag Team Champion on a recent segment of the “BroDown on Backstage Pass” podcast, Russo openly endorsed Green.
“I hope so [that she wins,] man. I really, really, really hope so.”
In the podcast, Russo further discussed the week’s inaugural match which saw Michin triumph over Piper Niven and NXT’s Lash Legend, thus moving forward in the tournament. He said,
“Here’s my thoughts about this match. Who’s buying one ticket to see Michin? Who? Mac, isn’t it more intriguing if Piper Niven wins since Chelsea is already through. Why should Michin claim victory? This woman doesn’t pique anyone’s interest.
“All that was needed was for Piper to sabotage Chelsea Green’s game, and then you’d have a protagonist in Chelsea Green. It’s that straightforward, but they chose to go with Michin, a name didn’t resonate with any of the show’s viewers.”
In the semi-final stage of the tournament, Green is set to battle it out with Bayley, while Michin’s opponent will be either Elektra Lopez, Tiffany Stratton, or Naomi.
Saturday Night’s Main Event will be the location where the tournament’s victor will be named. Also, it has been revealed that a Women’s Intercontinental title is in the offing.
