Vince McMahon’s recent decision-making in WWE continues to raise eyebrows among fans and experts.

During the July 17th episode of RAW, announcers Kevin Patrick and Corey Graves were instructed by McMahon to give numerous Superstars alliterative nicknames. This led to some noticeably forced commentary, prompting speculation that McMahon was exerting his creative control once again.

According to a report from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the use of these nicknames indeed came directly from McMahon, but their prominence was quickly toned down. The subsequent episodes of Smackdown and Raw featured fewer alliterative nicknames, suggesting that McMahon’s initial idea was not well-received by many. Dave Meltzer wrote,

“It was confirmed to us that all the alliterative nicknames on the 7/17 Raw were a directive from Vince McMahon. It wasn’t pushed nearly as hard on Smackdown on 7/21 or Raw on 7/24, so it looks like it was just an idea he had (and that most thought was bad) and he gave up on it after. They are still doing new nicknames of course, but not so many that it got silly, with Dirty Dom and Big Bronson Reed and such, but not to where the announcers just sound so fake with one alliterative nickname after another.”

Evidently, while new nicknames are still being used, they are now more sparingly applied, ensuring a more natural commentary flow for the announcers.
