The New Day would have become a thing of the past long ago had Vince McMahon gotten his way with the group.
The trio of Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods, and Big E were put together in 2014 and after some initial fan hostility, have become one of WWE’s most popular factions in history.
Fightful Select heard from multiple people who have worked in WWE’s creative team this week that the New Day has always been against the group splitting on TV via one member betraying the others.
That didn’t stop McMahon from trying, as one pitch by the Executive Chairman would have seen Woods turn on Kingston after the former won the King of the Ring in 2021.
McMahon’s reasoning was that “it’s what a King would do,” but Woods specifically fought against the heel turn.
Another pitch was for the group to be split following KofiMania in 2019 but the group fought to stick together.
McMahon has previously declared that the group cannot be referred to as the New Day if all three members are not present.
The 77-year-old billionaire was also adamant that the trio be split in the WWE draft in recent years, and was later adamant that they needed to be reunited.
The New Day hasn’t been together on WWE TV in quite some time due to Big E suffering a broken neck in March 2022.
