Vic Joseph has made his name as part of WWE but is not trying to replicate the commentary of Mauro Ranallo.
Ranallo was part of WWE from 2015 until August 2020, the same month that Joseph joined the WWE NXT commentary team which consisted of Joseph, Ranallo, and Beth Phoenix.
Speaking to “Insight,” Joseph told Chris Van Vliet that he isn’t trying to replicate the work Ranallo did on the gold brand. He said,
“I didn’t try to be Mauro, I didn’t try to give you a ‘mamma mia,’ I didn’t try to do his style, I have my own authentic way of doing things, and so me being me, I think drew the attention away from that, ‘Oh man, there’s a new announcer.’
“People respected the fact of, ‘Oh, this guy actually, he’s not half bad, halfway decent, he’s pretty good.’ Early on you’d see your tweets, and you’d see your mentions, you go into your Instagram, and you’d see, ‘We miss Mauro.’”
In addition to NXT, Joseph has also commentated for Monday Night RAW, 205 Live, WWE Main Event, and NXT UK.
Ranallo made a brief return to the wrestling world in 2021 when he commentated the Impact Wrestling Rebellion main event between then-AEW World Champion Kenny Omega and then-Impact World Champion Rich Swann, in a winner-takes-all match.
In the interview, Joseph also discussed his favorite match he’s called and his journey to WWE. Those comments can be read here.
