At the AEW Full Gear 2023 pay-per-view event in Los Angeles, AEW World Heavyweight Champion MJF competed in two matches where he suffered a hip injury during his World Heavyweight Title defense against Jay White and had to have it popped back in after the show.
Dave Meltzer detailed the real injuries that MJF suffered at the show in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
“MJF legit suffered a dislocated hip during the match as well as aggravated a prior shoulder injury. The hip injury took place when he was planning to do the spot where you come off the top rope and fly far, ending with an elbow drop putting your opponent through a table. However, when he put White on the table, it collapsed. Instead of just ditching the spot, he felt that the crowd was going to flatten if he didn’t do the spot, climbed up to the top rope and did an elbow drop from the top rope to the floor, which is an absolute killer on your hip. It was popped back in but he was in terrible pain. The shoulder injury worsened from a top rope uranage,” Meltzer wrote.

At the AEW Full Gear 2023 pay-per-view event in Los Angeles, AEW World Heavyweight Champion MJF had an eventful night that resulted in a hip injury. During his World Heavyweight Title defense against Jay White, MJF suffered a dislocated hip and aggravated a prior shoulder injury.
According to Dave Meltzer’s report in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the hip injury occurred when MJF planned to execute a high-risk move. He intended to jump off the top rope and deliver an elbow drop to White, who was lying on a table. However, when he put White on the table, it collapsed. Despite the mishap, MJF decided to proceed with the spot because he didn’t want to disappoint the crowd. He climbed back up to the top rope and performed the elbow drop from a significant height, which put immense strain on his hip. Although his hip was popped back into place after the match, MJF experienced excruciating pain.
Additionally, MJF’s shoulder injury worsened during the match when he executed a top rope uranage. This move involves lifting the opponent and slamming them onto the mat from an elevated position, which further aggravated his pre-existing shoulder issue.
Injuries are not uncommon in professional wrestling, as performers often push their bodies to the limit to entertain the audience. Despite the risks involved, wrestlers like MJF are dedicated to delivering memorable moments and ensuring that fans have an unforgettable experience.
