The Undertaker has been wrestling on borrowed time for years. A WWE legend through and through, his yearly WrestleMania exhibitions have been a series of ups and downs, with this year’s Boneyard Match seemingly offering a new and satisfying way to bring the character to life. In a talk with People Magazine promoting The Last Ride documentary on WWE Network, The Phenom discusses his hesitance to retire from the ring completely and his journey towards a singular perfect career-ending bout.

If everything originally went to plan, we would all have seen Taker’s last match already. As many assumed, Undertaker intended to end his career after his clash with Roman Reigns at 2017’s WrestleMania, only his second loss on The Grandest Stage of Them All. However, plans change, and a few missteps during the encounter made him persevere in hopes he can outdo himself. “I’ve had this amazing career, I’ve been so blessed to have this career and far exceeded the expectations of when I got in this business. But I kind of want the John Elway ending, you know?”

Whether Taker actually gets that perfect ending is still up in the air, and he knows it. Still, it seems like Undertaker will do whatever it takes to make that match happen. “I’m fighting an uphill battle and time’s running out,” he says. “But that’s the struggle. It has nothing to do with fame, it has nothing to do with money, it has nothing to do with anything other than wanting just that, “Yeah. That’s the match that I needed to go out on.'”
