WWE Hall of Famer Trish Stratus recently sat down with Adrian Hernandez for an interview where she reminisced about her encounter with Mickie James during the inaugural Women’s Royal Rumble match in 2018.
In the interview, Stratus offers a few tidbits worth noting:
The wrestling superstar discussed the backstage struggle to feature an interaction with Mickie James at the Rumble: “Initially, it was planned that Mickie James and I would have no interaction at all in the match. We felt that wasn’t right. Despite being guests in the current women’s wrestling scene, we felt the history we share would be remembered by fans. After some consideration, we decided to push for an on-screen reunion. It was a challenge. We kept reminding ourselves of the wrestling encounter we had 12 years prior and we had a hunch that fans would recall the moment as well.”
Trish further shared her worries about whether the fans would remember their past: “We had conviction, but there was also uncertainty. What if the fans didn’t recollect the rivalry that existed when we face off? After careful thought, we determined that the work we did years back was significant and the fans would undoubtedly remember. Hence, we pitched the idea, fought for it, and despite a handful of skeptical reactions due to the 15-year gap, we prevailed.”
She added insight on how wrestling fans are known for their sharp memory: “It’s wrestling. Fans recollect incidents from 15 years ago with ease, displaying their nostalgic fondness. We had a staunch belief in our past significance and the recall value it brought. We eventually managed to incorporate it into the match. If you observe closely, you can see our relief and excitement when we realize that our effort to include that moment was successful. Thank God.”
