While fans were all up in the air when CM Punk returned to wrestling on the premiere of AEW Collision in Chicago, his appearances in Toronto last week at Collision and Forbidden Door garnered a polarized reaction, and a very vocal one at that. While this may, in-part, be attributed to Toronto in general being the ‘bizarro world’ of wrestling, it seems clear that Punk will be eliciting among the biggest reactions in professional wrestling going forward, as he has done historically.
How Punk makes fans feel will vary from person to person, and different cities will have different overall reactions to the ‘Cult of Personality,’ ranging from him being the biggest babyface in AEW to perhaps the biggest heel in the company too.
This will certainly make for a very interesting dynamic, and Tony Khan has now made his thoughts known on the matter. Speaking on a recent edition of Busted Open Radio, “TK” said,
“I wasn’t surprised about that at all given that we were in Canada and given some of the things that had happened in the lead up to the show and in particular since the last time he wrestled, so I think as we go on the road, we are going to get a lot of great responses, but just like a sports team, it depends on where you’re at. Some sports teams are really popular in-home cities, and then when they go on the road, it depends, and definitely I thought this was a road game for him. He did great.”
While many wrestlers presented as babyfaces have often had trouble adjusting to the crowd’s negative responses, CM Punk seems to be effortlessly and elatedly navigating through that.
