In a recent episode of the “Battleground Podcast,” AEW President Tony Khan shared his thoughts on the ongoing discussions with Warner Bros. Discovery regarding the TV rights of AEW.
Here are some key takeaways from the podcast:
Talking about the recent negotiations with Warner Bros. Discovery, Khan said, “It’s a thrilling period for AEW. We’re having productive dialogues with our associates at Warner Bros. Discovery. It’s a genuine privilege for me and the entire AEW team to be able to broadcast wrestling on TBS and TNT weekly. Wrestling on these channels was a significant part of our growing-up years. TNT had a wrestling hiatus of around 18 years, while TBS had over 20. It was extremely important for us to revive that tradition, especially on TBS, which has been home to this sport for over 50 years. We’re truly pleased with the way conversations are proceeding. It is a dream come true to be able to do this.”
When asked about the viewership AEW programming has been attracting on WBD networks, Khan stated, “We’re involved in extensive, exhilarating discussions. There’s a lot to work out. We have outstanding shows including AEW Dynamite, Rampage, and Collision. Our prime-time shows, which both air at 8, have been garnering robust ratings. It’s an electrifying campaign for us. Last week both shows registered their highest viewership in months. It’s a time of triumph for us. The talks are incredibly promising right now.”
Khan also discussed the primary challenges in the ongoing discussions, saying, “We need to iron out a multitude of aspects related to the AEW TV shows, our pay-per-view content, our streaming library, and more. It involves numerous intricate discussions, but so far, they’ve been outstanding. We’re currently having constructive discussions with Warner Brothers Discovery. It’s a terrific partnership, and we feel privileged to be a part of it. It’s an excellent platform for wrestling.”
