The President of AEW, Tony Khan, talked about the increasing prominence of the AEW Continental Classic for his establishment recently.
While featuring on the “Battleground” podcast, he discussed the ongoing, round-robin format tournament.
The podcast highlights are shared below:
About the significance of the tournament for AEW: “It’s an outstanding tournament. There have been several tournaments, but a few features set our Continental Classic apart — no external disturbances, no one is permitted at the ringside, every match is a one-on-one, and we have an array of incredibly skilled wrestlers. AEW is where the best compete. Top stars are consistently involved in this tournament which has now become an AEW staple. I’m truly thrilled about it.”
About the tournament structure: “A unique aspect of the format, influenced by my time in the Premier League, is three-point wins and one-point draws. The G1 is a commendable tournament. However, in the Continental Classic, offering three points for a victory makes it highly lucrative compared to a draw which only gets one point, thereby pushing people to aim for the win.”
