Tony Khan Declines Discussions with The CW Regarding ROH TV Deal, According to Reports
– ADVERTISMENT –

The National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) reportedly signed a pair of deals with The CW Network to see Powerrr series and a reality show about the promotion air on the station, although that is in jeopardy because of the controversial moment during the NWA Samhain pay-per-view event that saw James Mitchell snorting cocaine. Also, WWE NXT is moving to The CW in 2024 after inking a five-year deal.

According to a report from Nick Hausman, a high-ranking executive from The CW Network approached Tony Khan at the LA Forum in June 2022 to discuss the possibility of featuring ROH programming on the network. It remains unclear whether these discussions occurred before negotiations with the NWA or WWE NXT began.

Khan decided to not pursue these talks, as he is unwilling to entertain new deals for ROH until AEW TV rights become available next year. He believes that by waiting, he will have more options and bargaining power in the market.

Reportedly, Khan felt it was not the appropriate time to strike a deal. It was also mentioned that The CW is open to hosting multiple professional wrestling products on its platform. It has recently been in talks with at least two other notable promotions aside from the NWA and WWE NXT.

The National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) has recently signed deals with The CW Network to air its Powerrr series and a reality show about the promotion. However, these deals are now in jeopardy due to a controversial incident during the NWA Samhain pay-per-view event involving James Mitchell snorting cocaine. In addition, WWE NXT is set to move to The CW in 2024 after signing a five-year deal.

According to a report by Nick Hausman, a high-ranking executive from The CW Network approached Tony Khan, the president of All Elite Wrestling (AEW), at the LA Forum in June 2022 to discuss the possibility of featuring Ring of Honor (ROH) programming on the network. It is unclear whether these discussions took place before negotiations with the NWA or WWE NXT began.

However, Khan decided not to pursue these talks as he is unwilling to entertain new deals for ROH until AEW TV rights become available next year. He believes that by waiting, he will have more options and bargaining power in the market.

It was reported that Khan felt it was not the appropriate time to strike a deal with The CW. Nevertheless, The CW is open to hosting multiple professional wrestling products on its platform and has been in talks with at least two other notable promotions besides the NWA and WWE NXT.

These developments highlight the competitive nature of the professional wrestling industry and the increasing interest from major networks in showcasing wrestling content. The NWA’s deals with The CW could have provided a significant platform for the promotion, but the controversy surrounding James Mitchell’s actions has put these agreements at risk.

On the other hand, WWE NXT’s move to The CW in 2024 signifies the network’s commitment to expanding its wrestling programming. This move could potentially expose NXT to a wider audience and provide new opportunities for talent within the promotion.

As for Tony Khan and AEW, their decision to hold off on negotiations with The CW regarding ROH programming demonstrates their strategic approach to securing the best possible TV rights deal. By waiting until next year, Khan believes he will have more leverage in the market and can explore various options for AEW’s television presence.

Overall, these recent developments in the wrestling industry highlight the ongoing competition between promotions and networks to secure the best deals and reach the largest audience.
