Since it first appeared on the scene in 2018, Tony Khan has consistently identified his organization, AEW, as a “challenger league” poised against WWE.
In a newly aired episode of the “WFAN Daily” podcast, Khan, the President of AEW, expressed his ambition to “craft something that stands as the supreme media property in the globe.”
Here’s some standout moments from the podcast:
Around AEW becoming a competitor for WWE: “My vision is to develop something that holds the position of being the ultimate media asset globally, akin to the NFL. To harness the rich legacy and historical significance, much like the National Football League. However, when it comes to wrestling, AEW is undeniably the most potent challenger organization since the AFL. We hold a substantial market share.”
Equating the scenario with NCAA divisions: “Let’s look at Big 10 and the SEC as an example. These entities compete fiercely, and that’s what you aspire to become. I believe there is ample room for both to flourish. There exists a potential for both to venture into competition. Moreover, there are leagues like ACC and PAC 12, providing a good comparison. I aim to take the lead, but the struggle never ceases. It’s an all-year-round process. … This marketplace is unique, wrestling is the only sport without an off-season.”
