During the latest edition of his “1 Of A Kind” podcast, WWE Hall of Famer Rob Van Dam commented on Tommy Dreamer’s involvement in putting together the ECW One Night Stand pay-per-view event back in 2005.
You can check out some highlights from the podcast below:
On how much Tommy Dreamer helped putting ECW One Night Stand together: “I have the impression that he helped more than I ever knew. I wasn’t communicating with him a lot, I would talk to Paul who would then talk to Vince. Maybe that’s why Dreamer was in on those meetings, maybe that gave two votes for some of our ideas — I’m not sure. But I know that I pitched it, and went around and asked all the boys to participate, and Vince was really warm on it [the idea].”
On Dreamer acting as a spy behind-the-scenes for RVD in WWE: “[When] he was part of the meetings, he was the only one who’d tell me, like, if somebody buried me in the meeting [laughs]. And everybody liked Tommy. Nobody ever had an issue with him.”

In the world of professional wrestling, there are few events that hold as much significance and nostalgia as the ECW One Night Stand pay-per-view event. Held in 2005, this event brought together some of the biggest names in Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) for one unforgettable night. Recently, WWE Hall of Famer Rob Van Dam shed some light on the behind-the-scenes workings of this monumental event during an episode of his podcast, “1 Of A Kind.”
One of the key figures involved in putting ECW One Night Stand together was Tommy Dreamer, a former ECW wrestler and longtime friend of Van Dam. According to Van Dam, Dreamer played a crucial role in the event’s organization, even more than he initially realized. Van Dam admitted that he wasn’t in direct communication with Dreamer during this time, but rather spoke to ECW founder Paul Heyman, who would then relay the information to WWE Chairman Vince McMahon. Van Dam speculated that Dreamer’s presence in these meetings may have given their ideas more weight, as it provided two votes in favor of their proposals.
Dreamer’s involvement didn’t stop at the organizational level. Van Dam revealed that Dreamer acted as a spy of sorts, keeping him informed about any negative comments or criticisms that were made about him during the meetings. This insider information allowed Van Dam to navigate the backstage politics and maintain a positive image within the company. Van Dam praised Dreamer’s likability and stated that nobody ever had an issue with him, making him a trusted ally in the cutthroat world of professional wrestling.
The ECW One Night Stand event itself was a massive success, capturing the spirit and intensity of the original ECW promotion. It featured legendary matches and moments that left a lasting impact on both fans and wrestlers alike. The event was so well-received that it led to the creation of an annual pay-per-view event under the same name, further solidifying its place in wrestling history.
For fans of professional wrestling, the insights provided by Rob Van Dam offer a fascinating glimpse into the inner workings of the industry. It highlights the importance of collaboration and the behind-the-scenes efforts that go into creating memorable events like ECW One Night Stand. Tommy Dreamer’s contributions, both as an organizer and a trusted confidant, played a significant role in the success of this event and showcased his dedication to preserving the legacy of ECW.
