During a recent episode of the radio podcast “Busted Open Radio,” Tommy Dreamer, an iconic figure from Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), provided his perspective on the initial segment of WWE RAW’s July 29 show. This segment starred famous wrestling figures such as CM Punk, Drew McIntyre, and Seth Rollins.
Dreamer suggested that the segment, which was utilized to build anticipation for the match between Punk and McIntyre at WWE SummerSlam 2024, would have benefitted from a grittier approach.
Speaking about the tone taken in the opening RAW segment, Dreamer commented, “Several main protagonists in the segment, particularly on the go-home show, had a cautious strategy to avoid injury or overexposure before the go-home show since a significant pay-per-view event with a packed stadium was around the corner. Some participants pushed the boundaries, while others played it safe.”
When it came to audience reception of the WWE RAW segment, Dreamer noted that he had hoped for more enthusiasm. He stated, “Personally, during this match and the segment that lasted almost 17 minutes, I wish the crowd was more engaged.”
Commenting on Seth Rollins serving as the special guest referee, he said, “I firmly believe that having Rollins as the referee adds a level of suspense for this match. It’s certain that tempers will flare. Drew McIntyre added an excellent point which I quite appreciated. He stated he will receive a sizeable payment to defeat CM Punk at a major stadium event.”
WWE’s SummerSlam 2024 is set to take place on Saturday, August 3, at the Cleveland Browns Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio.
