The “Six Feet Under” podcast recently featured none other than The Undertaker, who explored the topic of the notorious Montreal Screwjob. This scandalous event took place during the 1997 Survivor Series main event, conceived by Vince McMahon to trick Bret Hart out of the WWF Title and allowing Shawn Michaels to step into the spotlight.
The incident was a result of Hart’s imminent move to WCW, and his refusal to bow out to Michaels at the event. Below are some of the highlights from the podcast:
Delving into the Montreal Screwjob, The Undertaker shared, “Yeah, I’ve always held the view that I wish they’d communicated better with me regarding the Montreal incident. Perhaps we could have tackled things a bit differently. But, well, it turned out the way it did.”
When asked if he believes Hart would’ve surrendered the WWE Title the following night on RAW, he said, “Honestly, I can’t predict. Bret was unhappy – he didn’t want to exit. It all came down to the financials. Being a loyal soldier, he had a lot of emotions in the game. It’s hard to say… Perhaps he would have. But you cannot gamble in such situations. I will venture that he probably would have. He probably would have agreed to give up or vacate the title on live TV. But that’s not a favorable scenario for us. We certainly can’t have someone renounce the title and then join another program. It’s just unworkable. As upset as I was about the Screwjob, at the end of the day, I don’t know if they had any other choice. It’s regrettable, especially since Bret is a good friend, but he was still leaving. It was an unfortunate incident.”
Talking about how the Montreal Screwjob has overshadowed other aspects of their careers, he expressed, “It’s unfortunate. Both had incredible careers. This controversy, like a political sabotage, is hardly something to be proud of. It’s a topic of interest among fans, which is likely the only positive aspect. But it does saddens me, as I share a bond with both Bret and Sean. I’m glad everyone has moved past it, but it’s regrettable that it had to occur at all.”
