After a two-year-period of the quadruple-block setup, the G1 Climax 34 is reverting to a dual block, twenty-participant competition, set to kick off from July 20 and 21. The opening weekend promises a thrilling series of ten league match-ups across the two evenings.
Next week, on June 16 at New Japan Soul, eighteen entrants will uncover their respective blocks. Meanwhile, two additional contestants will be selected through elimination qualifiers, culminating in the finals at the Tokyo Budokan on July 5.
As the G1 officially begins, the 20-minute time limits from the previous year’s edition are set to be lengthened, with 30-minute demanding bouts taking center stage. Departing from tradition, this year’s point system will see a tie grant one point, whereas a win will earn two points, leading toward the league’s climactic nights.
An intriguing development this year is the progression of the top three finishers to the next round. The second and third place contestants will now go head-to-head in Makuhari on August 15. They will compete to join the leading point scorer in Ryogoku on August 17, where they will contend in semifinals to determine the top-most contestant from each block. The titans will then compete in the grand final slated for August 18.
Fans of the thrilling, seasonal event are anticipating a heated summer full of action and excitement. Don’t miss any moment of G1 Climax 34!
