At the 2024 AEW x NJPW: Forbidden Door event, Will Ospreay paid a remarkable tribute to Japanese wrestling legend, Hayabusa. Ospreay walked into the ring donning Hayabusa’s renowned mask, an honour that manifested his deep admiration for the late legend.

In a digital exclusive, Ospreay shared his emotion-laden journey of procuring approval from Hayabusa’s daughter for the tribute. He said,

“Back in 2022, I approached Hayabusa’s daughter to seek her endorsement to wear the iconic Hayabusa mask. Their family dynamics are unbeknownst to me, but her approval was vital. I was inspired to don the Hayabusa mask in celebration of the wrestling culture that sparked my love for professional wrestling.”

On his Twitter handle, Ospreay extended his gratitude to Hayabusa’s family for granting him the permission to honor the Japanese legend. He wrote,

“I am overwhelmed by your generosity in allowing me to bring to the spotlight your father’s significant contribution to wrestling. I am deeply appreciative for the opportunity to create a special moment full of love and respect.”

Released by AEW Japan, a heartfelt message from Hayabusa’s younger brother, Takanori Ezaki, acknowledges Ospreay’s tribute.

Takanori Ezaki shared, “Greetings, I am Takanori Ezaki, Hayabusa’s brother. Learning of Will Ospreay’s wish to incorporate Hayabusa’s costume and entrance theme at Forbidden Door filled us with pride. It’s touching to see the respect and adoration for my brother, two decades since his unfortunate accident. We express our sincere thanks and wish all AEW wrestlers safety. Moreover, we hope for the continued success of Forbidden Door and AEW.”

In an unfurnished narrative of camaraderie, recognition, and tribute, the wrestling community continues to honor the pioneers who shaped this sport. Ancient and modern, these masked warriors have imparted their unique cultures and fighting spirits, contributing to the rich tapestry of professional wrestling’s legacy.
