On a recent edition of the “Talk is Jericho” podcast, WWE Hall of Famer Kevin Von Erich explained why he wrestled barefoot for the majority of his career.
Kevin said, “Well, there are a lot of stories out there, but the truth is I had so many knee surgeries before I even started wrestling, in football. The leather boots, they get heavy and I took ’em off one time — Kerry used to do it too, and we loved it because you feel like you can fly taking that weight off your feet.”
Kevin’s sons, Marshall and Ross, also discussed their wardrobe choices.
Ross wears boots but Marshall wrestles bare feet.
Marshall said, “Now I can’t wrestle with shoes on! It’s a shoot, we’ve always been barefoot our whole lives. We have nasty feet because they look like hooves. We’ve been walking around barefoot everywhere, it’s just natural.”
Kevin Von Erich’s life and career are documented in the new biopic, The Iron Claw, which is currently playing in theaters nationwide. Kevin Von Erich is portrayed by Zac Efron in the movie.

The Legacy and Iron Claw of the Von Erichs
In the world of professional wrestling, there are many iconic figures who have left a lasting impact on the industry. One such family is the Von Erichs, known for their incredible athleticism and unique wrestling style. One notable aspect of their wrestling persona is their choice to wrestle barefoot. In a recent episode of the “Talk is Jericho” podcast, WWE Hall of Famer Kevin Von Erich shed light on the reason behind this decision.
Kevin explained that his choice to wrestle barefoot was influenced by his extensive knee surgeries before he even began his wrestling career. Having suffered multiple injuries while playing football, Kevin found that the weight of traditional leather boots added unnecessary strain on his knees. One day, he decided to take off his boots and found that it felt liberating, as if he could fly without the weight on his feet. His brother Kerry also followed suit, and they both continued to wrestle barefoot throughout their careers.
The tradition of wrestling barefoot has been passed down to the next generation of Von Erichs as well. Kevin’s sons, Marshall and Ross, have also chosen to wrestle without shoes. When asked about their wardrobe choices, Ross revealed that they have always been barefoot their whole lives. He jokingly added that their feet look like hooves due to years of walking around barefoot everywhere they go. For them, wrestling without shoes is natural and feels more comfortable.
The Von Erichs’ unique wrestling style and choice to wrestle barefoot have become synonymous with their legacy in the wrestling world. Their dedication to their craft and willingness to push boundaries have made them beloved figures among fans. Their story is now being told in the new biopic, “The Iron Claw,” which is currently playing in theaters nationwide. In the movie, Kevin Von Erich is portrayed by actor Zac Efron.
