According to Sullivan, Rhodes would’ve suffered a backlash had he dethroned Reigns, and it was better for Cody to take the “L” at WrestleMania 39.

You can check out some highlights from the podcast below:

On how winning at WrestleMania would’ve hurt Cody Rhodes: “If Cody had won after Sami [Zayn] had lost [at Elimination Chamber], I think it would have hurt him. I think if Cody had won, he would have got a backlash [with] people saying, ‘Oh, he just comes in and wins the belt while these guys [Zayn and others] have been here for years busting their ass?’ He needs to win the belt, but he needs to do what his father did — his father put the heels over first, dumped all the heat and all the adversity [before his coronation].”

On WWE’s booking of Cody: “I think they’re doing it perfectly, and now, if they go to WrestleMania 40, it’s time [for Rhodes to win]. You can’t give the people what they want all the time, you’ve gotta make them salivate for it.”

In a recent episode of his podcast “Tuesday with The Taskmaster,” former WCW booker Kevin Sullivan shared his thoughts on the highly anticipated match between Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39. To the surprise of many fans, Rhodes failed to capture the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship from Reigns in the main event of Night Two.

Sullivan believes that Rhodes would have faced backlash if he had defeated Reigns at WrestleMania. He argues that if Rhodes had won immediately after Sami Zayn’s loss at Elimination Chamber, it would have hurt his reputation. People might have criticized him for swooping in and winning the title while other wrestlers like Zayn had been working hard for years. Sullivan suggests that Rhodes should follow in his father’s footsteps and build up the adversity and heat before eventually winning the championship.

When discussing WWE’s booking of Cody, Sullivan expresses his approval, stating that they are handling it perfectly. He believes that if Rhodes were to win at WrestleMania 40, it would be the right time. Sullivan emphasizes the importance of not always giving the audience what they want, but instead making them eagerly anticipate and “salivate” for it.
