The Monday Morning Q&A: Discovering the Opponent for Cody Rhodes at Backlash

Welcome back to another Monday Morning Q&A where I toss out some questions to get a feel of how you guys and gals are feeling about certain topics.

So here are 5 questions I’d like to toss out for this week. I’ll give my answers, too, but the key here is that I want to know what YOU think! So make sure you chime in!

1) What are your thoughts on AEW airing the All In footage? Pros? Cons? Is this some WCW 2000 nonsense, or much ado about nothing? Does it change your opinions about CM Punk, Jack Perry, The Young Bucks, Tony Khan, or anyone else?

I think it was a mistake. There aren’t any benefits that I can imagine coming out of this. CM Punk already sounded like he has his flaws in this prior, and I don’t think many people were on the fence about that and then converted to be against him out of the blue from this. Most people, I’d imagine, looked at the situation the way I do: he was crossing the line and deserved to be fired, and this footage doesn’t deny that in any way, but reinforce it.

But at the same time, I think once you have that opinion, where else do you go? What else was to be gained? Instead, they lost from this, because it makes Tony Khan look like he’s too emotionally invested in fighting back for the sake of it, and is willing to make his company look bad by proxy of fighting a battle that doesn’t need to be fought.

Now, people are making fun of the “fearing for his life” aspect even more than before. Some people are acting like Jack Perry deserved it, so that’s a net loss on that front. It doesn’t make Perry look that much better, but even if it does, it calls into question why he was suspended for so long if TK views Perry as not being the problem. And it’s just another example of AEW feeling like they need to punch up to WWE’s level and defend themselves when WWE doesn’t focus as much on them.

It positions AEW as the underdog, but not in a romantic, positive light that gets people on their side. Instead, it comes off whiny, and I’d imagine a lot of people might be looking at this as one of the biggest mistakes and setbacks for AEW’s progress.

Nothing good will come out of this, and both WWE and CM Punk aren’t going to lose sleep over it. This was an equivalent of taking a swing, missing the other person’s face, and punching the wall and getting hurt, rather than just not throwing the punch in the first place and “looking weak” to some people.

2) What do you think The Rock handed Cody Rhodes?

All he revealed was that it could be thought of as “a war time overture” without specifying what. It’s something small that he could instantly know just from the feel of it. Those are our hints.

A lot of theories out there sound interesting until you think about them with more scrutiny.

Why would Rock hand Cody a lighter and indicate that he set the tour bus on fire when that wasn’t pushed as a part of the storyline?

How would he feel a watch in his hands and know exactly what it was when we’ve already been told at press conferences and interviews about the watches Cody bought for Rock, Roman Reigns, and Seth Rollins (which we’re not supposed to know about) and about the one Dusty Rhodes had pawned (which Rock wouldn’t have in his possession to give Cody anyway).

I like the theory of the bead from the necklace. That’s neat. So far, that’s my top pick from the suggestions I’ve seen people toss out. But I think realistically, they might not even know what it’ll be, and they’re just putting that out there for a possible reference in the future. It could be super important Chekov’s gun level writing, or it could be a meaningless McGuffin that we never get revealed.

3) What other matches, if any, do you think will be added to the AEW Dynasty card?

There are already 8 matches on the show. Normally, that’s the bulk of it, with only a few more being placed on the Zero Hour. Adding at least one is a guarantee, if not somewhere in the 4 match range.

Most of the titles are accounted for, but the trios belts aren’t. My guess is we’ll see The Acclaimed against Bullet Club Gold in a unification match as The Bang Bang Scissor Gang had imploded and set this all up over the past few weeks.

I could definitely see a match spawning out of the Orange Cassidy and Trent situation. Maybe something involving Blackpool Combat Club and The Don Callis Family to just spin off Collision and put more of those guys on the lineup, particularly to showcase Jon Moxley as the new IWGP champion.

But for the most part, outside of the trios title, I think the rest of the card will be made up of almost random filler. That’s the modus operandi of a lot of these events.

4) AJ Styles or LA Knight. Who do you think will face Cody Rhodes at Backlash?

Definitely AJ Styles. Rhodes needs a heel to work against. You don’t book him up against one of the other top babyfaces. It’s as simple as that.

Plus, it’s not like we haven’t wanted to see Rhodes against Styles, so WWE is getting a high-profile match for an international show that will keep people excited and not cast too much attention onto how Cody’s definitely not dropping that belt.

5) What do you think will go down between Sami Zayn and Chad Gable for the Intercontinental Championship?

A lot of people think Gable’s winning the belt. I feel like there’s no chance that happens. If that were in the plans, he might as well have won at WrestleMania, right?

Instead, I think we’re going to see either a heel turn from Gable, or, more likely, this will be the return of Sheamus that has been advertised.

Why is he suddenly on Raw? Well, I think he’s turning heel, freshening up his character a bit, and he’ll be the first feud for Sami heading into Backlash, as he’s been saying for years that he wants to win the Intercontinental Championship and scratch that off his bucket list.

Welcome to another edition of Monday Morning Q&A, where we dive into some thought-provoking questions and seek your opinions on various topics. Today, we have five questions that cover a range of subjects. So, let’s jump right in!

1) What are your thoughts on AEW airing the All In footage? Pros? Cons? Does it change your opinions about CM Punk, Jack Perry, The Young Bucks, Tony Khan, or anyone else?

AEW’s decision to air the All In footage has sparked mixed reactions. Some see it as a mistake, while others view it as an opportunity to showcase past events. One potential benefit is that it allows fans who missed All In to catch up on the action. However, there are also concerns about how this move reflects on CM Punk, Jack Perry, The Young Bucks, and Tony Khan.

Opinions on CM Punk were already polarized before the footage aired, and this development is unlikely to sway them significantly. As for Tony Khan, some feel that his emotional investment in fighting back against WWE may have led to a negative perception of AEW. Additionally, the decision has resulted in mockery and negative comments towards Jack Perry, which is not ideal.

Overall, it seems that AEW may have lost more than gained from this move. It positions them as the underdog, but not in a positive light that garners support. Instead, it comes across as whiny and may be seen as a setback for AEW’s progress.

2) What do you think The Rock handed Cody Rhodes?

During a recent interaction, The Rock mentioned handing Cody Rhodes something that could be considered a “war time overture.” However, he did not specify what it was. This has led to numerous theories and speculations.

Some theories suggest that The Rock handed Cody a lighter, indicating that he set a tour bus on fire. However, this wasn’t part of the storyline, making it an unlikely option. Another theory involves a watch, but this contradicts information shared in press conferences and interviews about Cody buying watches for other wrestlers.

One interesting theory is the bead from a necklace, which seems plausible. However, it’s also possible that they haven’t decided what it will be yet and are leaving it open for future reference. It could be a significant plot point or simply a meaningless McGuffin.

3) What other matches, if any, do you think will be added to the AEW Dynasty card?

The AEW Dynasty card already features eight matches, which is typically the bulk of the event. However, there may be room for a few more matches, possibly around four.

While most titles are accounted for, the trios belts remain unaddressed. It’s likely that we’ll see The Acclaimed facing Bullet Club Gold in a unification match, given recent developments between the two factions.

Additionally, a match stemming from the Orange Cassidy and Trent situation could be in the works. It’s also possible that Blackpool Combat Club and The Don Callis Family could have a match to build on the Collision event and showcase Jon Moxley as the new IWGP champion.

Overall, expect the remaining matches to be filler content, as is often the case with these events.

4) AJ Styles or LA Knight. Who do you think will face Cody Rhodes at Backlash?

When it comes to Cody Rhodes’ opponent at Backlash, AJ Styles seems to be the more likely choice. Rhodes needs a heel to work against, and pitting him against another top babyface wouldn’t make much sense. Additionally, Rhodes vs. Styles is a highly anticipated match that will generate excitement for the international show.

It’s worth noting that Cody is unlikely to drop the belt in this match, but that won’t dampen the enthusiasm surrounding this high-profile matchup.

5) What do you think will go down between Sami Zayn and Chad Gable for the Intercontinental Championship?

There is speculation that Chad Gable might win the Intercontinental Championship, but it seems highly unlikely. If that were the plan, he could have won at WrestleMania. Instead, it’s more probable that we’ll witness a heel turn from Gable or the return of Sheamus.

Sheamus’ sudden appearance on Raw suggests a potential heel turn and a freshening up of his character. He could become Sami Zayn’s first feud after winning the Intercontinental Championship, as he has expressed his desire to achieve this milestone.
