WrestleMania 28 may have been WWE’s biggest event of 2012, but it was a night The Miz would rather forget.
The previous year, The Miz had retained the WWE Championship in the main event against John Cena, albeit thanks to interference from The Rock.
By the next year, The Miz had plummeted down the card and would be one of several names in the ‘Team Teddy vs. Team Johnny’ tag-team match.
Speaking on a recent edition of the “Unbreakable” podcast, The Miz compared headlining WrestleMania 27 to his role at WrestleMania 28. He said,
“I was at the top … I lost the title, then I started losing every single match and by the time we got back to WrestleMania, I was almost not even on it. It was very embarrassing for me, I don’t know what happened.
“I couldn’t figure out how to maneuver myself to be a top-tier talent. It took I would say six years … it wasn’t until a guy named AJ Styles came in. When he came in, we started having a program together and it elevated him — I think we just elevated each other.”
Close to a decade after losing the WWE Championship, The Miz regained the title in 2021 but would only hold the gold for eight days.

WrestleMania 28: The Miz’s Fall from Grace
WrestleMania is the grandest stage of them all in the world of professional wrestling. It is the event where dreams are made and legacies are solidified. However, for one wrestler, WrestleMania 28 was a night he would rather forget. That wrestler is none other than The Miz.
The Miz had experienced a career high at the previous year’s WrestleMania, where he successfully defended the WWE Championship against John Cena in the main event. However, his victory came with a controversial twist as The Rock interfered in the match, helping The Miz retain his title. This catapulted The Miz into the spotlight and made him one of WWE’s top stars.
Unfortunately for The Miz, his success was short-lived. By the time WrestleMania 28 rolled around, he had fallen down the card and found himself in a less prominent role. He was part of the ‘Team Teddy vs. Team Johnny’ tag-team match, which was far from the main event scene he had been a part of the previous year.
Reflecting on his decline, The Miz recently spoke on the “Unbreakable” podcast and expressed his disappointment with his WrestleMania 28 role. He admitted, “I was at the top… I lost the title, then I started losing every single match and by the time we got back to WrestleMania, I was almost not even on it. It was very embarrassing for me, I don’t know what happened.”
The Miz struggled to find his footing and regain his status as a top-tier talent. However, everything changed when AJ Styles arrived in WWE. The Miz and Styles began a program together, and their rivalry elevated both wrestlers. The Miz credits Styles for helping him regain his momentum and become a top-tier talent once again.
Despite his setback at WrestleMania 28, The Miz eventually regained the WWE Championship in 2021. However, his reign was short-lived, lasting only eight days. Nevertheless, The Miz’s journey from the top to the bottom and back again serves as a testament to his resilience and determination.
As wrestling fans, we understand that the industry is unpredictable, and success can come and go in an instant. The Miz’s story is a reminder that even the most accomplished wrestlers can face setbacks and challenges. It is through perseverance and the support of fellow competitors that they can rise again.
In conclusion, WrestleMania 28 may not have been a memorable night for The Miz, but it served as a turning point in his career. From being at the top to nearly being left off the card, The Miz’s journey is a testament to the ups and downs of professional wrestling. His story serves as inspiration for aspiring wrestlers and a reminder to never give up on their dreams, no matter how challenging the road may be.
