AEW commentator Jim Ross provided insights into a variety of subjects in a recent episode of his “Grilling JR” podcast. Most notably, he discussed the famed WWE dispute between Goldust and Ultimate Warrior.
Highlighted extracts from the podcast are provided below:
Ross’s perspective on the iconic Goldust vs. Ultimate Warrior row: “It was a high-profile matchup — two competitors who demanded attention. The goal was to heighten Warrior’s appeal, and Goldust weathered that arrangement admirably. I saw no issues with this matchup. The aim was undeniably to boost our star’s popularity via the battle and its presentation. While both were significant characters, Warrior was making a comeback and meant to leave a mark.”
He further delves into Vince’s lofty ambitions for Warrior in 1996: “We were optimistic that we could recreate the magic, taking us back to Warrior’s golden era. Nevertheless, adjustments could have been made in the ring or in an interview, or be transparent about an injury preventing clearance. Various alternatives could bypass this situation. That in my view, is a trivial matter. However, they persisted with the bout. The old saying, ‘the show must go on,’ isn’t always applicable. In this instance, it was a poor choice. I question the benefit to either wrestler from the way this match unfolded.”
