After being absent from the pro-wrestling circuit since December 2023 due to a diverticulitis diagnosis and consequent surgery, Kenny Omega is poised to make his much-anticipated return to the wrestling ring.
The wrestler, best recognized as a former AEW World Champion, is set to lock horns with Gabe Kidd at the much-awaited event, Wrestle Dynasty, slated for January 5. This star-studded spectacle is a collaborative effort between renowned wrestling federations such as NJPW, AEW, Stardom, CMLL, and ROH, and will take place at the eminent Tokyo Dome.
In a move that created quite a stir earlier this month, NJPW set up a theatric brawl at Power Struggle 2024, where Omega hinted at his imminent return through an in-ring promo, followed by a backstage skirmish with Kidd.
Omega’s decision to re-enter the wrestling world via NJPW as opposed to AEW has sparked criticism amongst fans, particularly given the decreasing popularity of AEW’s offerings of late.
Being among the top-tier competitors in AEW, Omega’s first match following a one-year hiatus has the potential to create significant excitement and interest in the promotion.
However, in a recent revelation, Omega suggested that AEW doesn’t require his participation presently; instead, he prefers to step back and allow other active talents to shine.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter has offered fresh insights on Omega’s prospective return to AEW.
In accordance with the report, “Omega is intending to approach his full-time comeback gradually, with plans to transition into a full-time routine eventually, provided everything goes as planned.”
As of now, the timing of Omega’s reappearance on AEW television remains a mystery.
