The iconic Lucha Brothers duo, namely Penta El Zero Miedo and Rey Fenix, have been a key part of AEW’s tag team roster since the formation of the organization in 2019. There had been chatter of a possible move to WWE for the team.
Nevertheless, AEW President Tony Khan recently augmented Fenix’s contract, taking into account time lost due to injury. This addition to his contract not only delays any imminent move but also reinforces the likelihood of Fenix making a return to AEW’s programming agenda.
Intriguingly, there had been whisperings of Penta being in negotiations with WWE, suggesting that a leap to the rival company could be on the cards, provided the duo are offered suitable contracts.
However, later reports confirmed that The Lucha Brothers remain contractually obligated to AEW, indicating that an instantaneous transition to WWE may not be in the offing.
As previously reported by eWn, Fenix’s contract was stretched out by integrating time lost to injury, extending his stint with AEW by almost a full year.
While Khan has gone above and beyond to entice Fenix to stay by offering appealing contract proposals, there is yet to be a new contract agreement. This ongoing scenario has effectively put a hold on The Lucha Brothers’ possible transition to WWE.
On the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer shared that only Fenix’s contract was prolonged, leaving Penta nearing his free agency phase.
Considering Fenix’s situation, Meltzer highlighted that there is a possibility, albeit a slim one, of AEW leveraging his skills during the contract extension phase.
He further shed light on Khan’s tendency to avoid showcasing talent who are preparing to exit for WWE, and said Fenix might find himself “frozen” for a while. Nonetheless, if there’s a requirement for someone who consistently provides entertaining matches, Fenix might be considered, although he may not emerge victorious in these clashes.
Meltzer also suggested that AEW may place greater emphasis on talents like Bandido or even Hologram, who is currently a Khan favorite, to cater to the “masked Mexican wrestler” role. In addition, Khan doesn’t usually favor talents he anticipates are on their way out of the company.
Fenix was last seen competing on July 26 for CMLL, and his previous AEW match happened six days earlier on Collision, where he claimed victory over Tony Nese.
How Khan will utilize Fenix going forward remains to be seen, but it seems Fenix may stay inactive till his contract ends next year.
