It doesn’t seem like Rey Mysterio is going anywhere but that’s not exactly a lock, according to Dave Meltzer in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

Meltzer notes that Mysterio’s contract is set to expire soon and he has not (as of press time) signed a new deal with WWE. According to the report, Mysterio isn’t expected to leave the company but his status isn’t guaranteed at this point, either.

One point that was mentioned was the future career of Mysterio’s son, Dominick, and that would be taken into consideration. Meltzer speculated that “there is the idea not to do anything to upset WWE because it could negatively affect his son’s career.”

Rey has mentioned several times in interviews that he plans on wrestling long enough to share the ring before he retires, telling Wrestlezone last year that it was a “bucket list” item.

“I’m very blessed to have this second opportunity to be back with the company, and I really came back motivated on a different level. I’m focused on my physique, the way I train, the way I eat, but one of the main reasons is to be able to prepare my son to eventually step in the ring one day.

I want to have the opportunity to share the ring with him before I at least make an announcement to retire. I think that’s probably the last check on my bucket list, to be able to step in the ring with my son and be next to him when he’s feeling what I’m feeling for the last thirty years.”

Mysterio re-signed with WWE back in September of 2018, a reported two-year deal instead of the 18 months that Mysterio was said to be looking for. At that time, it was reported by PWInsider that despite not getting the deal he initially ask for, Mysterio did work a clause into the deal that allows him to test the waters of free agency at the 18-month mark if he chose to do so.

Mysterio was attacked by Seth Rollins on this week’s episode of RAW, which would either write him off of television if he doesn’t re-sign, or set up a feud with Rollins if he returns. WWE issued a storyline update on Mysterio’s eye after the attack, calling it a “critical” injury.
