The Impact of ‘Metalingus’ on Adam Copeland’s Character Development

Copeland said, “So Alter Bridge are my friends. Mark Tremonti, who wrote the song, is a very good friend. So that song’s with me wherever I go. And that was very important to me. To me, I’ve always been very musically motivated. And I think it sets the tone for a character. And it also sets the tone for Adam to get in that place. That music, from the first time I heard it in Mark’s house after I dropped a beer in his foyer after first meeting him, he played that for me. And I was out with a neck injury, I was like, ‘Can I have that song?’ And he was like, ‘Absolutely, dude.’ And we had just met.”

“And 20 years later, here we are. And I called Mark, and I said, ‘What do you think?’ And he said, ‘Absolutely! Absolutely, dude. That answer is not gonna change.’ And that was really pivotal and important to me. Because it would have felt really weird to come out to something else.”

Copeland will make his AEW Dynamite and Collision debuts this week.

Adam Copeland, also known as Edge, made his debut in All Elite Wrestling (AEW) last night at AEW WrestleDream 2023. One of the most notable aspects of his entrance was the use of his iconic theme song “Metalingus” by Alter Bridge. In a post-show media scrum, Copeland explained why it was important for him to retain the song and revealed that he had secured the track for his entrance in WWE as well.

Copeland expressed his close relationship with the members of Alter Bridge, particularly Mark Tremonti, who wrote the song. He emphasized that the song has always been with him wherever he goes and that it holds personal significance. Copeland stated, “To me, I’ve always been very musically motivated. And I think it sets the tone for a character. And it also sets the tone for Adam to get in that place.”

The connection between Copeland and Alter Bridge dates back 20 years when he first heard the song at Tremonti’s house. Copeland recalled the moment, saying, “I was out with a neck injury, I was like, ‘Can I have that song?’ And he was like, ‘Absolutely, dude.’ And we had just met.” Despite the passage of time, Copeland reached out to Tremonti to seek permission to continue using the song in AEW. Tremonti’s response was unwavering support, stating, “Absolutely! Absolutely, dude. That answer is not gonna change.”

For Copeland, it was crucial to maintain the connection between his character and the music that has become synonymous with him. He explained, “It would have felt really weird to come out to something else.” The theme song not only sets the tone for his character but also helps Copeland get into the right mindset before stepping into the ring.

Following his AEW WrestleDream debut, Copeland is set to make his appearances on AEW Dynamite and Collision this week. Fans are eagerly anticipating his performances and the continuation of his journey in AEW.
