The Impact of CM Punk’s Brand on WWE, According to Eric Bischoff

On a recent edition of his “Strictly Business” podcast, WWE Hall of Famer Eric Bischoff discussed WWE’s popularity skyrocketing following CM Punk’s return to the company at Survivor Series 2023.

Bischoff said, “[The CM Punk brand has] drawn hot in WWE. It did not draw hot in AEW. Big difference. Two different business models, two different companies, and two different approaches to the industry. The Punk that we saw in AEW was a no-win, ain’t going to happen, not going to move the needle — certainly not to the extent that everybody thought it would. And the ratings prove that. I know he sold a lot of t-shirts. That’s because there are a lot of WWE fans out there. Did not move the needle in AEW, actually did the damage in AEW because of the situation there. Because of the way the company is run and now you’re seeing an entirely different outcome, almost like two different products.”

CM Punk’s return to WWE at Survivor Series 2023 has caused a significant increase in the company’s popularity. This was discussed by WWE Hall of Famer Eric Bischoff on his podcast, “Strictly Business.” Bischoff pointed out that CM Punk’s brand drew much hotter in WWE compared to his time in AEW.

According to Bischoff, the difference in the reception of CM Punk in the two companies can be attributed to their different business models and approaches to the industry. The Punk that fans saw in AEW did not have the same impact and did not move the needle as much as expected. The ratings in AEW proved this, despite the fact that he sold a lot of t-shirts due to the large number of WWE fans. Bischoff also mentioned that Punk’s time in AEW actually did damage to the company due to internal issues and the way the company is run.

It is worth noting that CM Punk signed a multi-year contract with WWE after being fired by AEW following a backstage altercation with Jack Perry at All In 2023.

This discussion by Eric Bischoff highlights the different outcomes and products between WWE and AEW. It showcases how the return of a popular wrestler like CM Punk can have a significant impact on a company’s popularity and success.
