In the most recent episode of his “My World” podcast, WWE Hall of Famer Jeff Jarrett shared his perspectives on the underwhelming WCW and ECW invasion plot in WWE, the effect of the New World Order (nWo), and more.
Below are some standout points from the podcast discussion.
Discussing the necessity of execution in an invasion scenario, Jarrett said, “Execution is pivotal… Reflecting on the territorial era, there were various types — let’s call them invasion plots, executed correctly. Randy Savage’s feud with Lawler comes to mind… Savage arriving at the Memphis Studios on 1960 Union Avenue, people were aware that he managed another promotion. The invasion plot can always take different forms. In my opinion, the most successful invasion plot. When asked, I would say the nWo was a compelling example — yes, there were many dynamics and shifts. But it was essentially an invasion plot. Audiences thought, ‘Alright, here’s a group of people who made their name in the WWF back then, and now they’re taking charge.’ It certainly drew significant audiences and achieved immense success. However, it all comes down to how things are executed.”
When asked about the idea of hypothetically reviving WCW on Netflix, Jarrett commented, “Despite my hopeful wishes, my emotional investment in seeing WCW on Netflix, the fact remains that it’s been 23 years since the brand last appeared on television. The NWO continues to shift a huge amount of merchandise, but WCW hasn’t been moving, to my understanding, much of anything. A few throwback shirts occasionally, something along those lines. It’s hard for me to see substantial value there.”
