Edge and Randy Orton are scheduled to battle tonight at WWE Backlash, but the rematch was originally supposed to happen at Summerslam.

According to a report from Sportskeeda’s Gary Cassidy, the rematch was moved up due to a lack of star-power in WWE right now. Cassidy reported that when WWE decided to move the match up, they went with the ‘greatest match of all time’ marketing strategy to elevate the match.

Edge and Randy Orton legitimately thought that this was a ‘rib’ from Vince and Paul Heyman when they first found out about it.

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken Roman Reigns away from TV. Bray Wyatt has taken time off since the birth of his daughter. Becky Lynch is now gone due to being pregnant. Brock Lesnar has not been seen since WrestleMania. WWE was in desperate need of something big in hopes of keeping fans drawn into the product until fans can get back to arenas and the roster is back up to normal.

Regarding the tagline, once the talent agreed to compete at Backlash rather than SummerSlam, Vince McMahon decided to call it The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever.

Edge and Orton apparently thought it was a “rib” when Vince and Paul Heyman told them.
