WWE Hall of Famer, Afa Anoa’i, sadly passed away at the age of 81 on Friday. Wrestling giants such as WWE, TNA Wrestling, Roman Reigns, Triple H, Adam Pearce, and others have taken to social media to express their condolences and share their reactions to the news.
WWE made an official statement on Anoa’i’s passing, remembering him as one-half of the legendary Wild Samoans tag team and a significant figure in the history of WWE. Anoa’i and his brother Sika formed The Wild Samoans in the 1970s and reached the top of the WWE in the 1980s, collecting numerous titles. Anoa’i went on to become the manager for The Headshrinkers, comprising his son Samu and nephew Fatu, also known as Rikishi.
After retiring from the WWE in 1995, Anoa’i and Sika started The Wild Samoan Training Facility which trained future WWE Superstars. The iconic tag team was further celebrated in 2007 with their induction into the WWE Hall of Fame.
Many in the wrestling community took to Twitter to pay their respects. WWE expressed sadness at the passing of Anoa’i, TNA extended its heartfelt condolences, and individual stars such as Roman Reigns, Triple H and Adam Pearce shared their thoughts. The news is also being mourned by fellow wrestlers Matt Cardona and Joel Gertner, while commentator Simon Miller recognized Anoa’i’s far-reaching legacy.
